Though the final had been touted as the Messi vs Ronaldo show-down that the world had been waiting for – the Battle of the Ballon d’r – it was so refreshing to see that although Messi did emerge the clear victor he was arguably outperformed only by four players: Xavi Iniesta Puyol and Pique. Even Victor Valdes – so often criticised and shaky early in the game – made some potentially game-saving stops and Sergi Busquets put in a faultless performance in the middle of the park. Putting politics aside let’s dare say that Spain was as big a winner as Catalunya last night in Rome. Four Spanish internationals who will undoubtedly remain fixtures in Vicente del Bosque’s starting XI for Spain in 2010 starred in a historic triumph and two others played important parts as well. This was almost as ringing an endorsement for Spanish football as Euro 2008. Luis Aragones for so long so hapless put together the best team in the world and walked them to the trophy – their first in 44 years and just their second of all time – with cavalier ease. Since Del Bosque entered the frame they have only gotten stronger.
