Crisis Stings Britons in France and Spain
New York Times
Now that the financial crisis has burst the real-estate bubble in Britain and sunk the formerly high-flying pound the legions who crossed the English Channel are finding it trickier to achieve their idyll. Some have already headed back to Britain while the movement of others has been curtailed by the stagnant housing market on both sides of the Channel. In some parts of France and Spain local services had expanded helped by the spending of the newcomers. Now the economies of certain towns are also feeling the effect. Still a hard core of expatriates is determined to stay and pursue the dream despite the financial backdrop beyond their control. In 1996 Patricia and Steve Mansfield-Divine bought a dilapidated farm dating from about 1500 in the village of Saint-Siméon in the rne region of central France. The World Cup now beckons. And although neither Messi nor Samuel Eto’o play for Spain David Villa and Fernando Torres do. The statistics stack in Barca’s favour. They have won La Liga the Copa del Rey and the Champions League – the first Spanish team to complete such a treble – and have done so with daunting certainty. More than 150 goals have been scored in all competitions while in Europe 32 times the opposition has felt the pang of conceding against a side who average 62 per cent of possession – six per cent higher than any other team – and whose pass completion rate is touching an astonishing 90 per cent.
