(AP) — The king and queen of Spain got a dash of profanity from celebrity chef Mario Batali at a $1000-a-plate dinner during the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. At a Thursday dinner honoring Spain’s growing international culinary presence Batali dropped some royally naughty words as he hosted the event in the presence of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. Growing impatient when the crowd didn’t quiet down quickly enough after he stepped to the microphone he used the f-word and asked the audience if he could have “10 seconds of your time. “Batali dropped the f-bomb again while introducing chef Jose Andres whose Los Angeles restaurant The Bazaar has been heralded by critics. He finished by grabbing Andres’ bottom.

Spain set to loosen abortion law
The Associated Press -
In 2006 101'592 abortions were carried out in Spain. Comprehension and generosity could save this child" during an anti-abortion protest in Madrid. Spain is on course to ease its restrictive law on abortion setting the stage for another clash between a Socialist government that has already introduced sweeping social changes and conservatives and Catholic clergy bent on preserving traditional family values. Last year more than 100000 abortions were carried out in Spain one of the higher rates in Europe. A parliamentary committee took the first step this week recommending that the government legalize early stage abortions while gradually imposing more restrictions as pregnancies progress. Abortion is technically a crime in Spain though it is readily available under the current system with women needing a doctor’s certification that their health — either physical or mental — would be at risk if the pregnancy was allowed to proceed.

Spain judge in corruption probe row taken ill
Reuters -
Garzon 53 who is noticeable for his normally cool demeanour left Madrid’s High Court on Friday looking flushed and with a hand on his chest before being driven to hospital in his car the sources said. The investigating magistrate was suffering from high blood pressure and although he was out of danger the judge would be kept in hospital overnight while doctors continued to perform tests the judicial sources said. Garzon shot to international prominence when he tried to extradite former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and is a household name in Spain for his investigations into Islamic extremism ETA Basque militants and other issues. His anxiety attack was a further twist in a story that has dominated Spanish newspapers in recent weeks. Earlier this month Spain’s conservative Popular Party opposition accused Garzon of trying to smear its name and acting in league with the Socialist government. Garzon — known to his admirers as "superjudge" — is leading an investigation into bribery and misallocation of local government contracts in which members of the conservative Popular Party active in town hall politics have been implicated. The party’s anger boiled over when pictures were published in newspapers showing Garzon on a hunting trip with Justice Minister Mariano Fernandez Bermejo.
